Skipper lifts midfielder's spirits

Stafford Rangers captain Bobby Wilson has thrown his arm around Levi Reid after the midfielder became the latest victim of the penalty curse.

His spot-kick was saved by goalkeeper Craig Dootson with 10 minutes to go of Saturday's 2-1 defeat at Fleetwood in the Blue Square North, after striker Henrik Ojamaa was hauled down in the area.

Regular penalty taker Tom Thorley was not called upon, or last week's spot kick scorer Fabrice Kassiama - Reid took the ball and promptly missed.

A goal would have been enough for a point, but Rangers ended up leaving Lancashire with nothing despite a spirited performance against the second placed side in the league. It was also the second penalty miss in successive games - which cost them two points last time out after a draw against Droylsden.

Defender Wilson - back from suspension - had earlier put the team ahead with a header and, although disappointed, absolved his team-mate of any blame.

The skipper said: "It looked to me like Fabrice did probably fancy it, but Levi thought he had it in the bag so took the ball. He stepped up and had a go, fair play to him, but the goalkeeper has done well to keep it out."

Rangers' captain now has top scorer Nick Wellecomme looking over his shoulder after drawing to within one goal of the striker in the hotshot stakes with six to his credit - and wouldn't mind a go from the spot either.

Unfortunately for him, it doesn't look like Wilson will get there quickly enough.

He said: "I would happily take a penalty, but it's not really my department at the moment! To be fair, if I did want to take one I would have a job, it's a fair sprint up the pitch from centre-half and by the time I got there someone would have no doubt grabbed the ball."
