Brummies sign Aussie Anderson
Birmingham have completed their speedway team for the 2010 season with the signing of Australian prospect Jake Anderson.
The 20-year-old, has already gained some British track time, as a member of a young Australian team that toured during the summer competing against Britain under-21 side. He recently finished fourth in the Victorian Championship which was won by Wolverhampton star Ty Proctor and he beat some established names on the way to the final.
Anderson joins the Perry Barr club on a three-point average thanks to the fact that his great-grandfather was Scottish.
Other Premier League clubs were interested in snapping him up – but the lure of a move to Birmingham was too good to turn down.
He said: "Having visited England this year I was very impressed by Birmingham and it's a great opportunity to ride for a big club alongside some of my mates.
"I'm feeling very lucky to have this opportunity and I intend to make the most of it. I had other clubs interested in me but I've decided to join Birmingham."
The addition of Anderson means the Brummies will have a staggering six Australian riders in their starting line-up next season – and not one Englishman. The new boy joins skipper Jason Lyons, Steve Johnston, Richard Sweetman, Justin Sedgman, Aaron Summers and Californian ace Chris Kerr.
Boss Graham Drury said: "It must be some kind of record for us to have six Australian riders in the team.
"It's not something I went out to do at the start of my team building but I have signed the riders I feel can do the best job in a particular part of the team.
"I'm highly delighted with our line-up and I just can't wait for the season to start now!"
