Harriers star hopes for clean slate
Kidderminster Harriers defender Martin Riley returns to the fold on Saturday believing he has a clean slate after suspension.
The first choice centre-half is in pole position to start at Hayes & Yeading, after sitting out the 2-0 FA Trophy win at Matlock for picking up five yellow cards.
Captain Chris McPhee deputised in his absence, the third position the skipper – predominately a midfielder – has filled this season for the cause.
Riley's stock doesn't appear to have fell with manager Mark Yates, who still believes the 21-year-old is one of the brightest stars in the Blue Square Premier.
It was only the third game the former Wolves youngster has missed since making his debut at Grays last November, and his second of the season – all through suspension.
But at least the Harriers No 6 is no longer walking a disciplinary tightrope with one booking spelling a ban, although the player still refuses to take his place on Saturday for granted.
He said: "There are worst games I could have missed, although I still don't know where I managed to pick up five yellows from!
"I have just got to carry on training well and hopefully I will get my place back, although the manager won't let us know the team before tomorrow at the earliest.
"Mark pays me great compliments, and he's not afraid to let me know if I drop below the standards that are expected.
"I know he rates me and knows what I am capable of."
Riley, along with the rest of the club, face an anxious wait on the health of David McDermott, who is still in hospital with a mystery illness.
The Harriers defender's thoughts are with him.
He said: "I spoke to David a couple of days ago and he had a moan at me because I haven't been to see him. I'll have to go and take him some grapes!
"But, to be serious, I and everybody else at the club wish him a speedy recovery."
