Stourbridge manager Gary Hackett has revealed the non-league club could lose star winger Sean Evans for nothing.

The former Manchester United trainee is on trial at League Two strugglers Grimsby and a decision from the Mariners will come after he plays in a friendly tonight.

Evans has starred for the Glassboys this season, helping them to the FA Cup first round where they lost 1-0 to Walsall this month – the first time in their 133-year history the club had reached that stage.

But, because the player isn't under a contract, the 22-year-old can leave the Glassboys for nothing admits boss Hackett, who takes his side to Cradley in the second round of the Birmingham Senior Cup tonight.

He said: "Sean isn't under contract but even if he was clubs like Grimsby aren't going to pay any fee. They haven't got the money, but we might get a sell-on clause.

"The lad has been very good for us and we have been very good to him. We have got his career back on track and he's done very well.

"At our level you can't go around having 17 players under contract. We play at a good level and they get well looked after."

Hereford are also monitoring Evans and Hackett knows the final decision rests with the player.

He said: "Hereford have enquired about him but Grimsby were the first club to make a definite play, so he's given them first option."
