Gary Birch's second-half strike sealed the points for Chasetown in a hard-fought and entertaining game at Brigg Town.

Kidsgrove got off to the better start when Liam Shotton displayed good pace and crossed to Matt Haddrell, but Scholars goalkeeper Ryan Price grabbed the ball.

The visitors soon fought back with Ben Steane's cross finding Gary Birch in the goalmouth but his header came to nothing. Reece Styche then shaved the top of Steve Intihar's crossbar with a header.

Styche then went close again, firing straight at Intihar. A Chasetown goal was looking more and more likely and on 36 minutes the Scholars were ahead when Steane and John Branch produced some fine play down the right and found Birch, with the striker making no mistake with his right-footed shot.

On 41 minutes a long ball bounced over the Kidsgrove defence and, while Birch couldn't quite get to it this time, Styche did and he flicked the ball over Intihar to double Chasetown's lead.

Steane and Styche combined to set up Birch in the 59th minute and the striker fired home, but the strike was ruled out by the linesman who adjudged the ball to have crossed the goal line.

The home side pulled a goal back when full-back Danny Smith beat three defenders before firing low into the far corner of the net.

Chasetown's response was almost immediate and on 66 minutes Milligan and Steane combined, with the former sending a perfectly placed ball to Birch who headed home his second.
