Evans' vow to return after loan move

Stafford Rangers goalkeeper Lee Evans has vowed to reclaim the No 1 jersey at Marston Road upon his return from a month's loan at Midland Alliance side Shifnal.

The 26-year-old joined the Shropshire club last week and has already got 90 minutes under his belt, in a 2-1 win at Oadby last Saturday.

Evans has been allowed to leave to get match fit after an injury-plagued period since a summer move from Chasetown, having played just two games for the club.

An on-going ankle injury has curtailed his progress and new signing Bill Lumley has taken advantage, filling the breach.

But Evans has warned his rival for the berth that he came to Rangers to be first choice - and does not view the situation any differently now.

He said: "I was brought in at the start of the season to be the No 1 goalkeeper and I haven't been told any different, so I am just at Shifnal to get some games under my belt. I am still training with Rangers and should be back in the fold at the end of this month on loan.

"Then I will be looking forward to coming in and putting some good performances in, and I know I can do that."

Evans has still not completely recovered from his ankle injury, but is not at the point when he made his Rangers debut in a 7-1 collapse at Droylsden and then a 4-2 defeat at Southport three days later.

Such was the pain that the player could not even kick the ball properly from a goal kick, with manager Chris Brindley taking him out of the firing line as soon as young deputy Danny Allen was fit to take his place.

But the former Bromsgrove shot-stopper reported no after effects after last Saturday, and hopes that will continue to be the case.

He said: "It's still not 100 per cent and won't be for a while, so the physio told me, but it's recovered to a point where if I play it's not going to put the team under pressure. When I played those two games before, the pain was unbearable, now I am at the stage where if it's strapped and supported I am comfortable with it.

"I don't think anyone at Rangers has seen the real Lee Evans yet, because I was injured when I was asked to play before."
