Sugar reflects on sweet Swindon win
Wolves' last league win at Swindon was 14 years ago – and that was achieved with a stand-in team manager.
Current boss Peter Adams was unavailable that day and Reading chief Tim Sugar was asked to stand in.
Wolves, already running rider-replacement, then lost another rider to injury in his first race and also saw one of the reserves hurt.
Despite having to run just one rider in some heats, the visitors won 51-44 and Sugar – with a Wolves career record of played one, won one – received many plaudits for his expert juggling of the side.
He said: "I certainly remember it. It was fantastic, everything we did worked out. I'm confident it was very nearly my finest moment!
"We had rider-replacement, Wayne Carter got injured and one of the reserves was hurt as well. We ended with four fit riders.
"I duped the Swindon manager into one move which resulted in Wolves being able to pull another, stronger move.
"It's a good memory for me. I've no great affinity for Wolves – far from it! – but Chris Van Straaten and Peter Adams had asked me to team manage.
"I think everything I had to do, I did calmly. Something had happened in the Swindon team that week. There had been some dissent in the camp.
"We said on the track walk that we were determined to get at them early."
