Club historian Mark Sawbridge is looking for Wolves to repeat their 'Great Escape' of 2002.

The home side, with three riders carrying injuries or illness, ripped apart the Robins last night to give themselves a great chance of the title.

While Fredrik Lindgren glided to another superb five-ride maximum, many of the plaudits were reserved for skipper Peter Karlsson who was back on track just 14 days after breaking his collarbone.

Karlsson was paid for 11 points as his team sparkled in front of a big crowd and the armchair fans taking in the Sky broadcast.

The veteran Swede, aged 39, admitted to feeling the pain.

He said: ""It's tough to do it. I've done it before and you learn to handle it. But it's a battle with your own mind. There were many who told me not to do it.

"It felt kind of OK. It's not ideal, is it? You want to be fit and I'm not a guy that comes off a lot."

Despite clearly favouring the injury, Karlsson would have been unbeaten in his first four rides but for losing out in a rerun heat four after he led, only for reserve partner Ty Proctor to fall at the back.

The skipper said: "I was pretty happy with my riding and with my gating. If that first race hadn't been stopped, I would have been unbeaten until the last race."

While Karlsson was happy with the Parrys International Wolves' advantage, the captain warned against complacency for the final leg.

He said: "Sixteen is very good, isn't it? We've just got to try and get that out of our mind though, treat it as a zero-zero and go for the win on the night.

"It's the way you've got to think. We can't relax one second. Down there, they're going to eat us if we do that.

"We'll make sure we've got the heads around it, plug away, do our bit and see how it goes."
