We still miss 'Shooter' says skipper

Stafford Rangers captain Bobby Wilson believes the club need to fully replace former skipper Wayne Daniel if they are to stop the defensive rot that has engulfed the team.

The Marston Road men have shipped 25 goals in 10 Blue Square North matches, 14 of those in the last three games, and have only one clean sheet so far.

It's the knock on effect after central defender Daniel left in the summer for Worcester after seven years with Rangers.

And Wilson, who took the armband from the 32-year-old when he left, believes the void left by the hugely experienced stopper still needs to be filled.

The 21-year-old said: "We miss that bit of experience, definitely. I would love to see 'Shooter' back at the club, he fits everything we need at the moment. But he isn't coming back and there is nothing we can do about it, so it's up to the manager to bring that sort of player in.

"He's trying his hardest, he really is, and there's a few places he is looking to get that bit of stability that we need."

Rangers next go to Harrogate on Saturday, in the wake of another collapse after letting a two-goal lead slip to draw 3-3 against Eastwood on Saturday.

Finding the net has not been a huge problem, but keeping them out has been.

Wilson said: "It's been a bizarre season so far in that respect. In one respect, it shows how good we are to put three past the team in second, and bar silly errors we would have won that game.

"Defending set pieces is the big difference for us, we are not doing well enough in those situations.

"Whether that means the goalkeeper coming out and absolutely smashing it, or a defender hoofing into orbit, we must deal with those balls."
