New striker the foil for Wellecomme
Stafford Rangers forward Nick Wellecomme has hailed new strike partner Steve Thompson as a key factor after both scored at the weekend.
Their goals were added to by fit-again defender Andy Owens but it was still not enough for a win on Saturday, as title chasers Eastwood came back to earn a point in a 3-3 thriller.
It was goal number five from 10 games for Wellecomme, while Thompson has two in three after joining on a month's loan from Port Vale.
The new boy is filling the breach while summer signing Ben Mills is out with an ankle injury, with the 20-year-old expected back before the month is out.
But Wellecomme is delighted with his temporary aid, and believes the youngster brings another dimension.
He said: "Steve's record speaks for himself, he's a quality player. He gives us something a bit different to what we have when me and Ben are up top. We are very physical players, he's a very technical player. He's good on the ball and brings other people in the team.
"He's a good foil, a big man and a little guy to play off him."
Less pleasing for Rangers was another three goals conceded, taking the total to a shocking 25 already leaked for the Blue Square North season.
Wellecomme believes the whole team needs to shape up.
He said: "We are playing well but just not defending too well, to be honest. Set pieces are killing us, I think we have conceded something like 10 goals from that this season. Maybe we are too attack-minded this year, it can leave holes at the back which are being exploited at the moment.
"It's a team thing, I wouldn't single out anyone to blame because that wouldn't be fair."
