We'll be back warns Wolves camp
"We'll be back" was the defiant message from the Wolves camp after rivals Swindon clinched their place at the league's summit.
It's 42 years since the men from Wiltshire took the league silverware and they greeted this big step with a mixture of jubilation and relief.
But the trophy's destination will be decided by the play-offs – and Wolves intend to be back for revenge.
Each side has a tricky semi-final to negotiate first but the expectation is that these two clubs will be there for the final two matches of the season.
Skipper Peter Karlsson and whizzkid Tai Woffinden both believe that the Robins can be toppled.
Karlsson said: "We slipped away a bit at the end. On a good day we can beat them here. If you look at our team today there's plenty more for us to score."
Woffinden, who impressed again on his way to 11 points, was equally decisive.
He said: "We struggled with no Ty Proctor. There's a few boys in the team who didn't do as they should, but that's speedway.
" We'll just have to win in the play-offs and be league champions."
Woffinden is another who expects a Swindon versus Wolves final.
He said: "More than likely, but as it goes on aggregate I definitely think we'll win. We can keep it close here.
"When they came to Wolverhampton it caught everyone out because there was a lot of rain and the track was really grippy.
"If the track's like it normally is, then we'll smoke them at home."
Both riders had gloomy news on the engine front, Karlsson's recent problems prompting the introduction of a new power plant with mixed success while Woffinden blew a new engine in its first meeting.
Karlsson said: "I brought another one here today. But it's hard to jump on something that you're not used to round here and it didn't quite work."
Woffinden was left to contemplate the financial implications of his misfortune.
He said: "I blew an engine in my last race. Brand new engine, to.
"A lot of money went down the drain. I felt pretty quick as well – until I blew up."
