But Olympic were forced to sweat it out during the closing stages, after gifting the hosts what turned only out to be a consolation goal with 15 minutes remaining.

On 27 minutes Olympic were rewarded with an opening goal after Shane Benjamin chased a lost cause. After retrieving possession, he worked the ball to the edge of the area where May unleashed an unstoppable low drive into the bottom left corner past Chris Wright.

Worse was to follow for the shell-shocked hosts straight from the restart as the Pics won a free-kick 30 yards out down the right.

Tim Jackson delivered to the far post where May just beat his skipper Lee Barrow to the ball to rifle home from close range.

With Stamford pressing forward in search of a goal to reduce the arrears, Dave Cobb drilled a drive wide.

Just before the hour mark Benjamin and Mark Lowe combined to set up May whose 15-yard snap shot flashed agonisingly wide of the foot of the right post.

The inevitable happened with 15 minutes remaining as Stamford capitalised upon a goalkeeping error by Chris Gemmell.

His ball control let him down and presented Carl Gibbs with the simplest of opportunities.

But the Pics managed to hold on for an excellent win.
