Albion goalkeeper Scott Carson has spoken of his "honour" after being chosen to replace Jonathan Greening as new club captain.

The England international becomes the first keeper to be named full-time Baggies skipper, after Greening headed to Fulham to complete his £4.5million move back to the Premier League.

Carson took the armband for Tuesday's win at Peterborough and has now been named as Greening's permanent successor, with Jonas Olsson as vice-captain.

The 23-year-old said: "When the gaffer spoke to me before the game and asked if I wanted to be captain, I was delighted to get the chance.

"For him to put his faith in me is a big positive and I'm very grateful for that, and I hope I can repay him.

"It's a great honour to captain this club and something I've always looked at doing at some time in my career."

Albion were left needing a new skipper, after finally striking a deal with Fulham for the sale of Greening.

Subject to a medical, the 30-year-old will join the Cottagers on a season-long loan but the move will become permanent next summer.

Di Matteo said: "He was a big player for this club and we made every effort to keep him.

"But eventually we felt the deal on the table was a very good deal for us and we decided to sell him."
