Rangers striker gunning for hosts

Stafford striker Nick Wellecomme has warned Redditch that Rangers will be coming to add to their woes.

The 25-year-old forward will lead the attack at the Valley Stadium tonight (7:45pm), against a Reds side looking for their first point after three matches of 2009/10.

Rangers got off the mark by beating Workington on Saturday, after starting with two defeats, and look to build on their first points at the expense of their struggling hosts.

And with the likes of Farsley, Vauxhall Motors, Solihull Moors and Droylsden all to follow, Chris Brindley's men have earmarked these five games as a crucial period of the season.

Wellecomme - one of many who rolled their sleeves up for the cause last term - knows a good return could set them up for the autumn.

He said: "If we put in a performance like on Saturday, we are looking good to maybe get another win under our belts. There are plenty of points to win with the opponents we have over the next five games, that is where we are making targets.

"We didn't get off to the best of starts, but things are looking a bit brighter now."

The Rugeley-born player watched as new strike partner Ben Mills scored his first goal as a Rangers player on Saturday, with trial defender Fabrice Kassiama - set to start tonight - netting the second in a 2-0 win.

With the first goals and points on the board for the club, Wellecomme is now focussed on getting his goal account up and running for the season.

It opened the floodgates for him last season after netting against Southport, culminating in two goals in ultimately losing the Staffordshire Senior Cup final against Kidsgrove.

But, at the moment, he is just delighted for his former Newcastle Town team-mate Mills.

Wellecomme said: "I am always looking for a goal and tonight will be no different. It was the same last season, I had a torrid time getting off the mark but once I got one I went on a bit of a run.

"Ben got his break on Saturday, which is good for him, and now I am just looking for a similar sort of break. Hopefully this can be a starting point. I knew what a good player he was having played with him before and he is someone I rate highly.

"It is still early in the partnership so there are still criticising, but hopefully we can prove people wrong."
