Rangers wait on goalkeeper Evans

Stafford Rangers goalkeeper Lee Evans will undergo a late fitness test tonight to establish whether he will be ready to make his debut against Workington on Saturday.

But the initial prognosis is not good - the 25-year-old has not kicked a ball in weeks although he has returned to training.

Evans suffered a minor ankle ligament tear in the last pre-season game against Hednesford, an injury which normally requires a month out of action.

But the summer signing from Chasetown refuses to give up hope that he cannot cut that in half by returning in the Marston Road league clash, although he admits next Saturday's home game against Farsley could be a more realistic target.

The former Southern League goalkeeper of the year is still waiting for his Blue Square North debut after coming to the club as Rangers' new No 1, with trial goalkeeper Tom Harrison continuing to fill the breach in his absence.

Should the new-boy miss Saturday's visit of the Reds, Harrison will also be likely to continue for Tuesday's trip to Redditch.

But Evans is not ruling anything out yet.

He said: "I am progressing steadily, I have working with the physio but I am still having problems kicking the ball, which is a very big part of goalkeeping!

"We train tonight, so I will have a big work-out to see how it's coming along - but this Saturday may be a bit close for me.

"But from initially not being able to walk to being able to do a light session in less than a fortnight, the improvement has been really rapid."
