Baggies' kit alarm after fire

Part of the Baggies' football kit has been destroyed in a fire at West Bromwich Albion's laundry room.

A build up of dust in the tumble dryer has been blamed for the blaze, which wrecked the room at the club's Great Barr training ground and filled much of the rest of the building with smoke.

Kit laid out in the adjacent dressing room has also been damaged by the smoke, which filled the surrounding corridors, but club officials said the strip for tomorrow's Championship opener versus Newcastle is unaffected.

Club spokesman John Simpson said: "The laundry room has been gutted, but the fire protection system did its job and with the help of the fire service the fire was contained to that area."
