Although the Brummies never looked likely to lose the meeting, various setbacks along the way prevented them from taking their advantage completely out of reach.
Richard Sweetman uncharacteristically failed to score from his first two rides and skipper Jason Lyons blew an engine on the start-line in heat 13.
But Brummies continued to show encouraging form at reserve with Herne and Lee Smart both scoring well and there was a solid home debut from Rusty Harrison.
