Young Harriers up for the cup

Kidderminster Harriers manager Mark Yates will not play his full-strength side but has still backed his side to win the Worcestershire Senior Cup against Evesham.

A number of postponements have led to the 2008/09 final finally taking place at Worcester City's St Georges Lane tonight (7:45pm) - five days before both teams kick off their domestic seasons.

While the Southern League side may view the silverware as an attractive opposition, Harriers consider the visit of promoted Hayes & Yeading to Aggborough on Saturday as their first priority.

So Yates is poised to send a blend of first-team, fringe and youth players down the A449 to play the final - although he has promised the team will be competitive.

Not just to win, but also to preserve the club's unbeaten record in the close season, which was extended to eight games with a 2-2 draw against Port Vale at Aggborough on Saturday.

The manager has called for his men to rise to the challenge again.

He said: "There won't be too many of the squad playing, but we will putting a side out strong enough to win the game. We will have a look at it before and decide from there.

"At this stage of pre-season winning this cup is not our first priority, but it is still a winnable game that we have no intention of losing. Once we get there, we will want to win the match.

"We will see who needs games and pick our team from there."
