Rangers No 2 backs Proffitt to shine

Stafford Rangers assistant manager Darren Read believes the rejuvenated Dorryl Proffitt could emerge as the winger the club have spent all summer looking for.

The young attacker returned to the club this summer after falling out-of-favour at the end of last season, looking to catch the eye of manager Chris Brindley and reignite his career at Marston Road.

Proffitt has pedigree - he was an England youth international before losing his way in the game.

Now with the benefit of a proper pre-season training under his belt, the former Manchester City starlet has been blooded mainly on the team's problematic right flank - where Brindley has made it known he is looking to strengthen.

But until that search bares fruit Proffitt is an option, with just 10 days to go before the season opener at Hyde.

Now the assistant boss has also thrown his backing behind the player - provided he can produce the goods week in, week out.

Read said: "On his day, Dorryl Proffitt is as good as any player in this league, but he needs to find that bit of consistency and he knows that. We have noticed a difference in him in pre-season, he has come back in and is fitter and stronger.

"We are looking for a winger, so if he can step up and be the answer to that problem than that is great for us and him. He could find himself in that slot come the opening day at Hyde.

"Dorryl has kept his head up and got on with it. He has had a few setbacks in his time but he is improving in every game with us. He seems to be growing in confidence, to go with the ability we all know he has.

"We have asked him to play wide right at times in pre-season and it's new to him, but he is getting better at it all of the time."
