Vale old boy gunning for former club

Stafford Rangers midfielder Jake Moult aims to show boyhood club Port Vale what they are missing at Marston Road.

The 20-year-old spent most of his childhood as a starlet at Vale Park but never made it to the first-team - despite captaining the reserve side - and was eventually released in 2007.

He joined the Valiants at the age of 12, coming through the youth system with the likes of Chris Martin and Danny Glover, who will be on the opposite side after making the grade.

But Moult has ended up at Marston Road, via Plymouth and a move into non-league with Leek, becoming an integral part of the Rangers midfield after signing last October.

Now he aims to show his former club what they are missing tomorrow (3pm).

The central midfielder said: "I will be looking to have a good game for my club and at the same time show Vale what they are missing, definitely.

"After being at a place for so long, it will be pleasing to play against them. To pit myself against them will show how far I have come.

"I still know a lot of the lads in the first-team that came through the ranks, so it will be nice to see them again.

"I am very much looking forward to it."

Moult was a big part of a settled midfield at the end of last season, with all four still on the books.

Tom Thorley has pledged his future to his hometown club after his release from Stoke, while Christian Millar has been at Marston Road throughout pre-season.

Acting captain Bobby Wilson makes up the quartet, and he was one of the first to sign on this summer.

Now Moult has called for the middle of the park to lead the charge and make last season's almost to the wire relegation battle a distant memory.

He said: "We want to make sure we are safe a lot earlier this season. There has been no big ambitions set or anything like that, it's going to be a tough season we know that, so it's important to take each game as it comes, but we all want to kick on.

"If we can get as many results as we can in the bag as early as we can, we will give ourselves a great chance of that."
