Hughes re-wrote the Staffordshire Minor Counties record books with a stunning performance in the three-day championship clash with Norfolk.

The 21-year-old plundered a superb unbeaten 184 – the highest score by a player on debut for Staffs.

He also shared a 300-run stand with former Derbyshire and England batsman Kim Barnett – a Staffs record for any wicket and a Minor Counties best for the fifth wicket.

Hughes said: "Winning this award adds to what was a special day. It was great to bat with Kim Barnett, he gave me the confidence to express myself and play my natural game.

"I was just concentrating on batting and wasn't aware of the records.

"I really enjoyed the experience of playing for Staffs and hopefully I will be included again later in the season."

Hughes wins a £75 voucher to redeem against Hawk goods in the company's Belbroughton shop.

Hawk are supplying the prize each month throughout the summer and rounding the season off in style with a full cricket makeover, including one of their hand-made bats, worth over £400 to the player of the season.
