Star Scot near call on Wolves move
Transfer-target James McCarthy is still grappling with his two-club tug-of-war as Premier League rivals Wolves and Wigan await his verdict.
The 18-year-old £2million-rated midfielder from Hamilton Academicals has now completed his talks with both clubs.
Barring any last-minute efforts to hijack the deal, he must now must choose between the Premier League newcomers and one of the division's more established but lower profile clubs.
Wolves had initially been promised an answer by yesterday, but have now been advised that they should know which club McCarthy has chosen later today.
Chief executive Jez Moxey said: "It's a young man facing a big, big decision and the delay is understandable. There is absolutely no pressure from here on a decision."
Scottish-based reports have hinted that Wigan, now under the guidance of new manager Roberto Martinez, are slight favourites but the player suggests he is genuinely torn between the two choices.
McCarthy admitted: "I was impressed with what Wolves had to say, I spent the morning with them.
"The stadium is impressive and the facilities are great. I met Mick McCarthy and we had a good chat.
"Wigan was great too. I was on the phone to Roberto Martinez during the day, because he wanted to know what was happening.
"I came home over the weekend to think about it."
His Hamilton manager Billy Reid also acknowledged that the coveted young player was dealing with a tough decision, over the first big move of his career.
He said: "I don't know what James is thinking at the moment, he has got a big decision to make.
"It's a big step up for a laddie who's 18-years-old, but I'm quite sure he will make the right decision."
