Jones sets sights on Saddlers glory
New Walsall signing Steve Jones has admitted he had a 'gut feeling' to sign for Walsall and wants to bring some promotion glitz to the Saddlers.
The 32-year-old penned a two-year deal on Friday after his release from Burnley and follows Mark Hughes through the Banks's Stadium door.
Walsall beat off competition from a raft of League One and Two clubs - as well as sides from abroad - to land Jones, who insists they were his first choice.
He said: "It was a gut feeling, I thought this is right for me – something just seemed to be right.
"I came down and had a good chat, the boss showed me around the place and it was just an initial reaction to sign here.
"The training ground is good, we have a good bunch of young players, the stadium is up and coming so I knew what I wanted to do.
"I had a few options at League One, some at League Two and quite a few abroad so I had options - but I've done enough travelling in my career."
The versatile Jones, who can play upfront or on either wing, experienced Burnley's meteoric rise to the Premier League last season.
He admits he now wants to taste promotion success with Walsall, after his regret at missing out at his top flight chance.
Jones said: "The lads were buzzing at the end of last season but I couldn't celebrate that much with them because I knew I was out of contract and the gaffer had made it clear how he felt.
"It was disappointing, I'm a bit gutted my contract came to an end because I'd have loved one more year just to try the Premier League.
"But I'd like to get that promotion feeling here."
Jones, who played at Crewe with Saddlers goalkeeper Clayton Ince, revealed he is likely to play on the wing next season but has still targeted at least 10 goals for his new club.
The attacker said: "Some games I prefer up front and some I prefer on the wing. It depends how we're playing, it's swings and roundabouts.
"If I was a striker I would set myself targets, but I think I'll be playing on the wing. I would like to get to 10 goals and then hopefully provide another 10."
