Record-breakers back in action

Cannock skipper Liam Hickey has his fingers crossed opening pair Mike Talbot and Chris Woodcock can repeat last weekend's record-breaking heroics.

Brewood snatched the Staffs Club Cricket Championship from under the noses of Beacon as star all-rounder Chris Pearce hit 130 runs and bagged a five-wicket haul.

The duo's opening stand of 235 set a new club record in the Birmingham League, Talbot hitting 151 and Woodcock 88, to set Sutton Coldfield a target of 278.

It was still not enough to earn them victory, as Sutton dug in to finish on 139-5 – forcing Cannock to settle for a winning draw.

Hickey said: "They just weren't interested in going for the runs. It was one of those boring days in cricket."

Struggling Evesham are up next for the fifth-placed side.

Penn will be strengthened by the return of four players to their attack for Saturday's visit of Tamworth.

Richard Brooker, Hiren Patel and Arvinder Bhogal are all back in the side, while Depesh Patel is fit to resume bowling duties after recovering from a shoulder problem.

Patel's half century could not prevent Penn falling to a four-wicket defeat to Aston Manor last weekend – despite them clocking up a total of 201.

Skipper Richard Bradford said: "In my four years as captain I have never had a score of over 200 knocked off before.

"I was proud of the lads who came in. If we keep getting run totals like that I'm sure we'll be fine."

Wombourne welcome back Calvin Priest for their top-of-the-table showdown with Aston Manor.

Fast bowler Priest is back for the second-versus-third clash, after a month sidelined with a calf injury and returns at the expense of Ben Holmes.

Liam Hughes' men are full of confidence following their seven-wicket demolition of Ombersley, which included a five-wicket haul from Alex Hughes and 53 from Karl Quiney.

The skipper said: "It's a massive game for us. We're on 160 points.

"We are looking for promotion and if we won that would take us to 180 or more, which would give us a great chance."
