Wilson sets his sights on captaincy

Stafford midfielder Bobby Wilson has laid down his case to be named the new Rangers captain for the 2009/10 season.

The armband is currently vacant after the departure of Wayne Daniel to Worcester, after seven years at Marston Road.

'Shooter' will be a tough act to follow, with Wilson the first to step up and put himself into the frame.

The 20-year-old was among the first to commit his future to the club for the new campaign, having been promised by manager Chris Brindley he will consider his case to be named skipper.

Now the box-to-box youngster has his sights set on the most responsible role in the team.

He said: "That is the thing that really swayed staying at the club for me, the prospect of becoming captain. For me at 20 to be leading the side would be a great honour for me, and it's something I know I can do well.

"To have that on my arm would really push me on as a player."

Wilson only returned to the club in March after a spell at Gainsborough, but helped Rangers to their successful fight against relegation from the Blue Square North.

The Essex-born player had left Marston Road after the infamous financial cuts last December, which saw the playing squad have their wages chopped in half for the rest of the season.

That put a real strain on the youngster - who at the time relied on football as his main source of income - which inevitably led to his departure.

But now he has a full-time youth development job at his boyhood club Nottingham Forest paying the bills, the midfield dynamo can finally follow his heart.

He said: "I never wanted to leave, but I was a young lad living on my own and needed to be paid to survive. My family all live in Spain, so I couldn't rely on them, so I went to Gainsborough.

"When I left them to come back, it was me who asked for the move, not a case of them wanting me to go because I was under contract anyway. I knew it was right for me to come back.

"I don't have to reply on Stafford as my main source of income now, I have a good job at Forest that pays me a wage."
