Big Ron calls for 'impact' replacement

Former Albion manager Ron Atkinson has urged the Baggies to appoint an 'impact manager' to succeed Tony Mowbray.

'Big Ron' reckons Hawthorns chairman Jeremy Peace should even consider ex-Celtic boss Gordon Strachan as a possible successor to the man who took his job at Parkhead.

Atkinson dismissed talk of a long-term project and insisted Albion must appoint a boss to make an instant impact.

He said: "Who would I take? I would certainly be interested in Darren Ferguson, because of the younger managers he is one of the brighter ones.

"Whether they could get him or not, I don't know. But if they can't get someone of that ilk I would go for an impact manager.

"We hear talk about 'the project' and I don't think there is one. I think the job is to get back in one season.

"I would have a little tickle, although I've not spoken to him about it, for Gordon Strachan.

"He's got contacts in the Midlands, his son lives here and I think he's still got a place here."
