Penn wants to be Harriers skipper

Kidderminster midfielder Russell Penn has put his name forward to be considered for the vacant Harriers captaincy next season.

And if manager Mark Yates doesn't like that idea, he knows another good man for the job - club veteran Dean Bennett.

But, as it stands, the field of candidates are still very short.

The England C international is one of only three players left under contract at Aggborough, with left-back Lee Baker and attacker Darryl Knights.

Penn admits the player exodus made him consider his own future at the club, but insists he is still fully committed to the cause.

Having skippered the side before, the captain's armband could be the ultimate sweetener.

He said: "The last time I had it the gaffer took it off me, because he reckoned it was taking away the spark in my game. I've had it a few times and I didn't mind it at all.

"If I was asked to be the skipper for next season, I would probably say yes."

If he is overlooked, Penn has put forward Bennett's name as another strong candidate.

But the 31-year-old midfielder is still out of contract, although negotiations are still ongoing.

It is thought he wants to stay, as Penn reveals after speaking to his partner in the middle of the park throughout the summer.

The 23-year-old said: "Yes, Dean would be a great choice as well. He knows the club inside out and would certainly get my backing. If he signs for next season, I think he has the qualities to be a very good captain for us.

"I have spoken to him a few times since the end of the season and he wants to sign. But, for financial reasons, the club don't seem to want to confirm anything at the moment.

"He was one of our best players in the back end of last season, we need to get him signed up."
