Sneekes backing McInnes for job

Former Albion hero Richard Sneekes has backed ex-midfield partner Derek McInnes as an ideal successor to Tony Mowbray at the Hawthorns.

Dutchman Sneekes reckons his former Baggies captain would be a good choice to step in if Mowbray leaves for Celtic.

The St Johnstone boss has been installed as bookies' favourite to replace Mowbray and friends in Scotland have made it known the 37-year-old would be sorely tempted by the prospect of an Albion return.

Sneekes said: "Derek is a born leader and he played in a position where he always used to influence games with his talent.

"In the last couple of weeks I have spoken to Derek a few times and he seems to be enjoying himself in management.

"If what I have heard about him at St Johnstone is right, then he seems to have done well.

"Would he be a good choice for Albion? I think so, yes."

McInnes's name is certain to be mentioned in connection with any vacancy at the Hawthorns, should Mowbray leave for a return to Glasgow.

Sneekes, who played for a season alongside the former Rangers midfielder, reckons his old skipper could marry the steel he showed as a player to the attacking football Albion have developed under Mowbray.

The Dutchman said: "From what I have heard about Derek as a manager, his teams try to play football in the right way.

"In that sense it would be interesting, because he was the type of player who used to get stuck in and show real passion.

"I am sure he would try to get the team showing that, but also keep them playing good football."
