McInnes tips Albion for Ferguson

Former Albion midfielder Derek McInnes has tipped Barry Ferguson to be a Hawthorns hit if the Baggies manage to land the former Scotland captain.

McInnes reckons his former Ibrox team- mate could lend vital experience to the Baggies' Championship promotion push.

The duo played together for the Gers in the mid-1990's and McInnes is urging his former club to press ahead with their pursuit of the deposed Rangers and Scotland skipper.

McInnes, who has just managed St Johnstone to the Scottish First Division title, said: "Barry was a young guy when I was at Rangers and I played alongside him when he made his debut.

"It probably wasn't until Dick Advocaat came to the club that he got an extended run in the side but you could tell he had great ability.

"I know it's not been the best year for Barry but he would be a fantastic signing for Albion, not least because of how they play.

"He'd fit in perfectly with Tony Mowbray's playing style. He's a leader and a winner."

McInnes believes Ferguson's all-round attributes are what make him the player he is.

The former Albion player said: "The good thing about Barry is that he does different jobs from midfield.

"The main thing is he can influence games wherever he plays.

"He'll score you goals, he can dictate play if that's where you want to play him.

"But I think he's best as a deeper player, where he can make things happen.

"He's the kind of player who will demand responsibility on the ball and want it all the time. Albion fans would take to him.

"I think he'd do a good job for them if he signed."
