Stafford manager Chris Brindley has assured supporters that the ball is firmly rolling on assembling a competitive squad for next season.

The Rangers boss has some big decisions to make over the coming days and weeks with the bigger picture in mind - forming a band of players who can help the club kick on from their successful relegation fight in 2008/09.

At present, he is doing it from scratch, with no players under contract and no signings yet made - although with his own future clarified significant steps can be taken forward.

With the first summer in charge set be one of total rebuilding, Brindley will need time for his plan to come together.

He will also need to be extremely prudent, with finances still very tight at Marston Road.

The manager said: "When you have got very little money, you can afford to waste nothing. Every single player will have to earn every penny we pay them next season, so the decisions I make with personnel I have to be absolutely sure of.

"There's loads of players out there, I am on the phone to people all of the time."

Brindley is currently in the process of working with the current squad, establishing who will be offered deals for the forthcoming season.

He explains that the players will be in no hurry to sign up, they will keep their own options open until the summer wares on.

But the manager admits some tough decisions may have to be made.

He said: "I would like to keep them all, but that may not be possible. It's in their hands, I have spoken to every one of the playing staff here and explained to them the situation.

"They will shop around, that's not just at Stafford Rangers but at every club. But there are players that want to play for us, they will be the sort of people I will want in my team for next season.

"We will have to wait and see what happens."

The Rangers boss also moved to assure fans that - whatever happens this summer - the focus is on putting the building blocks into a place of a side who can compete in the Blue Square North.

He added: "Let me assure everybody that no-one is waving the white flag at this football club.

"I am up to the challenge, and there will be players in that shirt next season who will give it their very best shot."
