Skipper speaks on shock exit
Kidderminster captain Mark Creighton believes his departure from Aggborough was because the club couldn't afford to keep him.
The defender was sold to Blue Square Premier rivals Oxford on Tuesday, a day after the club announced they would be releasing eight first-team players in financial cutbacks.
Just four players now remain under contract for next season, while offers have been made to four others who are all under 24 - whether they are being kept on to safeguard their value or to build a team around remains unclear.
But Creighton won't be a part of it, the skipper has ended a three-year spell at Aggborough for an undisclosed fee.
He leaves hoping his former club survive and - along with the rest of the players on the way out - points to football recession's as the major factor of his exit.
He said: "The club couldn't afford my wages anymore, so it was best that I left. I don't know what the fee was, but whatever they have got for me I hope will help towards next season and the gaffer's budget.
"I don't blame the club for letting me go. The chairman's certainly not to blame, he's an honourable guy and he would never take risks with the football club's future - nor would he let the players go unpaid or anything like that.
"Something had to give eventually, the club have possibly done the right thing. But it's going to be very, very difficult for the manager next year.
"He's good at his job - it's a test for him and I wish him all the very best."
Creighton had some inkling the current storm was coming, so it came as no surprise when he was told Oxford's offer that had been accepted.
They could offer everything Harriers could not - the security of a three-year deal at the Kassam Stadium.
He said: "I saw it coming, to be honest. I knew the club were struggling financially and I knew the cuts were coming, so as a senior player I knew no-one was really safe from it.
"I'm a man of the world, I have had real jobs so I won't whine about it. Kidderminster will always be very close to my heart, I have had three fantastic years at that club that I wouldn't swap for the world.
"Oxford came in with the security of a three-year deal that I had to appreciate, in this lean times a big club like that have shown massive faith in me."
