Skipper expects non-contract squad

Stafford captain Wayne Daniel expects most of the squad to remain at Marston Road for next season - but working without contracts.

Rangers really suffered from obligations made to players last season, especially when financial cuts were forced upon the club in December.

Daniel and 20-goal striker David McNiven were thought to be the biggest earners, although both players saw out their contracts despite having their wages halved for the second half of the campaign.

Now the millstone has been completely removed from around the club, all players and management are unattached and waiting for offers to stay.

Skipper Daniel believes those others will be forthcoming, but on non-contract forms - which basically offers a wage if your fit and playing.

He also reckons the Marston Road outfit won't be alone, all but a handful of clubs in the Blue Square North next season are likely to follow suit.

He said: "Most of us are expecting to be offered non-contract deals. I don't think that is just at Stafford, it will be the same at most teams at our level over the summer. Contracts anywhere this summer in the Blue Square North are going to be pretty rare.

"I am not expecting to be on the money I was on this season, I don't think any of the boys are expecting that. "

Non-contract deals are not uncommon, the likes of goalkeeper Tim Sandercombe, defender Liam Murray and midfielder Bobby Wilson all finished the season at Marston Road on similar sort of deals.

They offer freedom for the player and the club but no guarantees, whatever happens out on the pitch can really impact on the future relationship.

The Rangers captain sees non-contract deals as both a help and as a hinderance.

He said: "There are problems with being non-contract. If you are injured you don't get paid, the club can get rid of you at the drop of a hat, it can be a problem. Most players want to be under contract for that security, but that will be the marketplace this summer.

"Of course, there is a flip-side to that. If you want to leave and join another club, you can do so within a week. So if your not playing, it's easier to leave and get a game elsewhere.

"It's like your best friend and your worst enemy at the same time - it's a double edged sword."
