Officials have put the finishing touches to an extension for the young midfielder, who has been a revelation since getting his first-team chance.

Now the 22-year-old could celebrate his new deal by making a return to action against Wigan tomorrow after a foot injury.

The £150,000 signing from Livingston has a year remaining on his existing deal, plus a further year's option in the club's favour, but manager Tony Mowbray is pleased the Scotland under-21 international is close to agreeing a longer stay.

Mowbray said. "It's something that's imminent. Great credit to the boy, he's deserved his new contract.

"He's taken huge strides, broken into the team and warrants the contract that's being offered to him, which he's more than happy to sign.

"Hopefully it's the start of a long and successful journey with this club."

Dorrans could be back in action tomorrow after returning to the training field for the first time in almost a fortnight.

He was unable to take a full part in the team session, but could still return against the Latics.
