Hotshot hopes for England chance

Kidderminster striker Matthew Barnes-Homer is hoping that he will get the chance to put himself in the shop window on the international stage this month.

The 21-goal top scorer is on standby to be involved with the England C squad for the first time for the International Trophy Challenge Final against Belgium, which is being played at Oxford United's Kassam Stadium a fortnight today.

Barnes-Homer's involvement probably rests on players pulling out of the initial 24-man squad but, with the game coming two days after the Blue Square Premier play-off final, those involved with their clubs may not be risked.

This would particularly affect Nicky Wroe of Torquay.

Should the 23-year-old make it to the final cut, it wouldn't hurt the former Wolves junior to put himself in the limelight either - the top scorer is out of contract at Aggborough.

He said: "It would be a great opportunity for me, especially after how hard I have worked this season. To get on and play for my country would just be fantastic for me, so let's just and see what happens now.

"I have spoken to goalkeeper Adam Bartlett about it and he thinks I have got a good chance, but it's not up to me whether I make the final 16. It's up to someone dropping out or the coach deciding that I should be involved.

"Obviously with me being out-of-contract as well, this would be a good chance for me to show everyone what I can do."
