Wolves knocked off top spot

Wolves tumbled off the top of speedway's Elite League after a nightmare conclusion to their match at Foxhall Heath.

They were still in contention with four races to go when they trailed by just six points.

But first Czech reserve Hynek Stichauer and then teenager Tai Woffinden fell and were disqualified in successive attempts to run heat 12.

It left the Ipswich pair of Dawid Stachyra and Tobi Kroner to circulate unopposed for a 5-0 which left Wolves 11 adrift.

The one glimmer of light was that the margin enabled world championship leader Fredrik Lindgren to don the double-point black and white helmet in the following heat.

The brilliant Swede overhauled Jarek Hampel, but couldn't quite catch Piotr Swiderski and so dropped his only points of the night.

Lindgren, who has made a scintillating start to the campaign, took his fourth win of the evening in the final heat but Wolves were out of it by then.

There was again good middle order support for Lindgren from Adam Skornicki and Woffinden, the latter in the wars with falls in his third and fourth outings after being unbeaten in his first two.

But the biggest surprise was to see skipper Peter Karlsson, an acknowledged master of the Suffolk circuit, winless from five starts and running last places in his final two rides.

Ipswich packed solidly throughout – every rider was paid for at least one win – but Wolves are now off the top of the table after Swindon's victory over Belle Vue and must regroup for tonight's difficult match at Lakeside.

Ipswich: Piotr Swiderski 11+1, Danny King 9, Dawid Stachyra 8+2, Jarek Hampel 8+1, Morten Risager 7, Tobi Kroner 5+1, Carl Wilkinson 3.

Wolves: Fredrik Lindgren 16, Adam Skornicki 8, Peter Karlsson 6, Tai Woffinden 5+1, Chris Kerr 3+1, Hynek Stichauer 2, Nicolai Klindt 0.
