Baggies told not to throw in towel

Midfielder James Morrison has told Albion's players they owe it to their fans not to throw in the towel for the rest of the season.

Morrison yesterday met hundreds of fans, some of whom queued for more than two hours at the Merry Hill Centre to meet their heroes despite the Baggies' dreadful season.

And Morrison says the players have a duty to supporters to perform in the final seven matches of the Premier League season, regardless of whether they are relegated back to the Championship.

"We want to put in good performances and pick up some wins and try to give the fans something to cheer about, otherwise what's the point?" said Morrison.

"They deserve it. They have stuck by us and haven't given us as much grief as other teams, whose fans have got on their back.

"They have supported us really well and hopefully we can give them something to cheer about. If relegation does happen we want to be able to take positives out of it and look to the future."

Fans queued for hours at Albion's Merry Hill Centre club shop to meet Morrison and injured defender Neil Clement, who signed autographs and posed for photographs.

Morrison then took time out to discuss the Baggies' plight at the foot of the table and insisted their survival hopes are not yet dead.

He said: "From this year we will be much stronger if we go down and then come back into the Premier League. But we've got to look to stay up. It's going to be hard but we can do it.

"Obviously it's not a good situation that we're in and but we've still got a chance.

"In football anything could happen and we could go on a bit of a run now."
