Wellecomme urged to build on goal

Stafford manager Chris Brindley is hoping striker Nick Wellecomme has been given the confidence to fire the team out of the relegation zone.

The much-maligned forward finally got his first Blue Square North goal of the campaign in th 3-2 defeat at Southport last Saturday, and was lively again in the 2-0 defeat at Alfreton on Tuesday night.

Only goalkeeper Steve Dickinson stopped him from making it two goals in two games but his eagerness to get stuck in cost him in the end, losing possession in midfield that led to the Reds' second goal.

Thats the way it goes in a relegation fight and there will be no time for the 24-year-old to mope, he faces the back line of second-placed Gateshead on Saturday.

Brindley said: "Hopefully, Nick's goal last Saturday has given him a bit of confidence, it's not easy leading the line in a struggling side, we saw that at Alfreton.

"We are all getting criticised left, right and centre and maybe he has bore some of the brunt of that - as we all have.

"He is aware of the fact that he needs to score more goals, but nobody works harder for the team than Nick Wellecomme - hopefully he can nick a few more."
