Yate 1 Halesowen 2
Halesowen kept their British Gas Premier play-off challenge alive with a narrow but morale-boosting victory at relegation-haunted Yate.
The visiting substitutes were late arriving and, after a slow start, not helped by the hard, bumpy playing surface, Yeltz goalkeeper Nick Bussey saved from Aaron Blakemore in the 21st minute.
Aaron Cornwall gave Halesowen a 25th minute lead from the penalty spot after Justin Rowe was brought down in space by goalkeeper Matthew Lee, who fortunately received only a yellow card.
Cornwall missed a golden chance to double the lead from a second penalty award in the 32nd minute after Jay Denny's legs were clipped. This time Lee guessed correctly to save.
A poor Yate outfit improved near the interval with the lively Aaron Blakemore twice going close. He then levelled by heading home his captain Ed Vahid's deep left-wing cross when there seemed to be little danger seconds before half-time.
James Johnson missed a good opportunity to notch Halesowen's second goal in the 57th minute, but his poor first touch allowed goalkeeper Lee to collect before Halesowen snatched the winner amidst 65th minute controversy.
Cornwall continued to cross from the bye-line following a short corner and substitute Francis Williams headed home his first Halesowen goal at the far post, despite Yate players seeming to stop for an injury.
A bunch of Bluebells bookings followed after a series of protests and substitute Fabian Brown almost hit another late goal against the rattled hosts, but Lee turned the ball against the crossbar and away.
