Coventry 46 Wolves 44
Teak-tough Ty Proctor stole the show as Wolves went desperately close to a famous victory at old rivals Coventry.
The 22-year-old was paid for 12 points from five starts in the reserve berth, as the Parrys International Wolves were edged out by two points.
But they were comfortable aggregate winners by 96-87 of this two-leg challenge, having led by six points in mid-meeting before the Bees mounted a fightback.
Proctor caught the eye in the first leg on Monday, despite having suffering nasty abrasions after laying down his bike at Newport the day before in a vain bid to miss the fallen Jason Doyle.
Wolves team manager Peter Adams was sufficiently wowed by the Aussie's showing to abandon his customary taciturn demeanour.
He said: "He was fantastic, a man-of-the-match performance. He beat Edward Kennett, he beat Rory Schlein – those aren't gift points.
"Some of his races he won by half the length of the straight."
Skipper Peter Karlsson had a brace of victories while Fredrik Lindgren was paid for 10 points. They were separated by Schlein in the final race when a 5-1 would have given Wolves a draw on the night.
Tai Woffinden and Adam Skornicki were again solid in the middle order, although Nicolai Klindt could make little impression on the scorecard and new Czech rider Hynek Stichauer, on his first visit to Brandon, struggled to get on the pace.
Wolves now eagerly await Thursday's Knockout Cup first leg at Swindon.
Adams added: "It was a good, close meeting all the way through. We got off to the worst-possible start with a 5-1 against us in heat one. I don't think that will happen very often.
"The killer blows were heats eight and 14, when Klindt and Skornicki were last. Those really are the kind of points that turn matches one way or the other. Those riders are in the races for a reason and they didn't deliver.
"It's nit-picking, but we were in control of the match at halfway. But I am suitably enthused – but the real business starts on Thursday."
