Two years left for Wolves boss

Wolves speedway boss Chris Van Straaten plans to leave the club in two years' time.

Van Straaten is aiming to complete an extraordinary 25 years at the helm before quitting Monmore Green.

He revealed his plan at a pre-season fans' talk-in at Chillington WMC, near the track.

He said: "I love the sport – I wouldn't have been in it so long if I didn't. I'm going for my silver jubilee and then that is it. Shoot me if I'm here after that!

"That will take me to 25 years and then I'll be in the record books at Wolverhampton. I don't think anyone will beat that. I've put my life and soul into this club."

But Van Straaten, whose time in charge covers three league titles, may not be lost to the sport. He relaunched speedway at Redcar in 2006 before selling his interest and has not ruled out a new venture.

He said: "Maybe I can face another challenge, if I'm sprightly enough and can still get about! Different people react differently and I don't think I'm one for retiring. If I try to have a day off I get bored to tears."
