Wellecomme challenged to step up
Stafford manager Chris Brindley has challenged forgotten striker Nick Wellecomme to make a starting berth his own in the Rangers attack.
Wellecomme rejoined the club last month upon his release from prison, after serving four months of a eight-month jail term for affray.
The 24-year-old came back to Marston Road with Brindley now in full charge as boss, after the departure of Steve Bull earlier last month.
So far he has only managed two second-half sub appearances against Telford but - with David McNiven and Mark Magee beginning and ending the other striking options - the powerful frontman will certainly be needed.
With Rangers out of action since New Years Day, Wellecomme has had some much-needed time to get back to full fitness and is in contention to start on Saturday against Burscough.
Brindley said: "Nick has worked very hard to get back to the fitness we need him to be at. We need him to be firing, so the work he has put in over the past two to three weeks will stand him in good stead.
"I will have another look at him at tonight's training session, and then we will see how we line up for the weekend. We all know what a good player Nick is, so if he can show that tonight he has a good chance.
"He is - of course - in contention to start on Saturday against Burscough."
Brindley reports no further movement on the recruitment front at Marston Road - in or out - with the club currently operating with a squad of around 18 players.
That is likely to change, with the terms of loan duo Dean Craven and Christian Miller from Bromsgrove and Macclesfield respectively to end later this month.
It is possible they could stay but, if one or both were to depart, midfield reinforcements would certainly be needed. It could probably come in handy either way.
It is thought that some room for movement could be available after player cuts, so Brindley must be wise with his resources.
He added: "I will be looking into that. But I will only use that resource for the right player."
