A battling second half display was not enough to save Chasetown from defeat in their FA Trophy tie.
Ilkeston had the better of the chances over the opening 20 minutes with Steven Istead sending a shot into Ryan Price's arms.
The visitors took the lead on 25 minutes when a Ben Pringle cross was fired past the diving Ryan Price by Anthony Howell.
Ttwo minutes later Pringle whipped a freekick into the box and Tom Cahill headed home at the near post for their second.
The Scholars' chances were restricted to a 35-yard shot from Wayne Dyer, a Gary Birch header which went over the bar and Danny Smith's header which was gathered by Ilkeston keeper Chris Adamson.
Chasetown started the second half in a more determined mood and Birch beat two defenders to power into the box but his shot went wide of the upright.
Dean Perrow replaced Branch to join the attack just after the hour and the new formation began to reap dividends.
The Scholars reduced the deficit on 74 minutes when a Harry Harris free-kick into the area was headed home by Birch.
In the closing minutes, Birch beat two men to get into the Ilkeston area but failed to get his shot in and visiting skipper Lee Thompson cleared.
On 90 minutes a Harris free-kick was punched clear by Adamson, allowing substitute Sam Duncum to run through on goal for the visitors but he was tripped by Craig Holland who was shown the red card.
