Williams ponders return to the field

Rushall assistant manager Lee Williams may make a playing comeback less than a year after a freak accident cost him part of his sight.

Williams may opt for protective goggles to protect his injured right eye, as he considers a return to the field at the age of 35.

The midfielder, who played professionally with Mansfield and Cheltenham, was left partially-sighted in his right eye last December. He hit his head on the tailgate of his car while unloading a Christmas tree and needed surgery to save his eye.

Williams retired from playing and joined Rushall as righthand man to Paul Holleran, his former boss at Halesowen.

The No 2 said: "I am thinking about giving it a go again as a player. I have looked into the possible of getting some goggles that would allow me to play again reasonably safely.

"I split my eye in the accident and I had to have surgery to put it back together. The sight in my right eye isn't too good now. It's like looking through a frosted window.

"But the biggest risk is that I could lose the eye completely if I played and got another bang that did some more damage."
