Van Straaten has described the report, carried on local radio, as 'completely untrue' and no such agreement is in place.

Promotion and relegation was introduced by the British Speedway promoters' Association last winter and there is a hefty financial reward for Premier League champions Edinburgh to beat Wolves, the Elite League's bottom club.

Wolves, who have booked James Grieves as a replacement for the injured Morten Risager on Friday, are looking to keep the score tight before returning to Monmore Green for the second leg next Monday.

Van Straaten said: "It's a worrying time for us but I don't even want to contemplate the prospect of us going down."
