The trapdoor match at Monmore

The Elite League's first ever relegation play-off comes to Monmore Green as Wolves host Peterborough in the first leg.

The match marks the start of three matches in three days for the side, with the second leg taking place on Thursday following the Wolves' annual visit to Birmingham in the Midland Shield.

Promoter Chris Van Straaten has been working hard to prepare his side. The team have met up for a meal together to set their final plans for the meeting, a move which prompted Peterborough manager Mick Bratley to say "could be like the last supper for them!"

Van Straaten responded with: "It's all about the riders and what happens on the track, and we are trying to prepare ourselves in a professional manner."

The promoter added that he is looking for around a 14-point lead to take to the East of England Showground for Thursday's second leg.

The losing side in the tie will face a further play-off against the victors in the two-legged Premier League promotion play-off, which will be contested between Edinburgh and King's Lynn tomorrow and Friday.

The Panthers will be without Australian star Ryan Sullivan, after he failed to gain an extension to his short-term contract. Ipswich's Rory Schlein will deputise.

Home skipper Fredrik Lindgren and Niels Kristian Iversen suffered the unlikely postponement of the final Grand Prix of the season at Gelsenkirchen in Germany on Saturday.

An official statement from the organisers citied the reason for the cancellation as poor weather, during the construction of the temporary track at the Veltins Arena, which caused safety concerns on race day.

The event will be restaged this Saturday night at Bydgoszcz in Poland, and this means that Wolves' final Elite League match of the season at Eastbourne has been moved back to Sunday at 4.30pm.

The Elite League title was decided in favour of Poole Pirates last night, as they comprehensively beat Lakeside 60-33 in the second leg of the play-off final at Wimborne Road, and 108-75 on aggregate.

Following tonight's match, the next action at Monmore Green is the Banks's Olympique individual meeting next Monday (October 27).

Tapes go up at Monmore Green tonight at 7.30pm.
