Rangers are down to the bare bones up front, which will decrease further when David McNiven joins Fleetwood on loan for a month from Wednesday.

That leaves just non-contract player Paul McMahon and new boy Darryl Proffitt as the out-and-out options.

The Stafford boss has so far resisted the urge to recall summer signing Lindon Dovey from a loan spell at Stourbridge and is instead looking to bring a new forward in.

Port Vale's former Chasetown star Kyle Perry is among those to say no to a loan move to Marston Road this far.

For Bully, if he wants quality and quick, he may have to use his contacts and the stongest contact of all could be a phone call to Molineux.

He said: "If that is an avenue that I have to go down, then I will do. To be fair, that is the one road that I haven't gone down yet. But I have spoken to Wolves manager Mick McCarthy before and he knows what I am trying to do here.

"If he can help me out, then he will do and he has told me that."

This is not a decision the Rangers boss will take lightly, especially after the little impact that the last Wolves player sent to Marston Road, striker Liam Hughes, had last season.

But managing at non-league is a field where contacts must be used and Bully knows it.

He said: "We have gone down every channel we can think of and keep hitting a brick wall. It is not as if clubs letting players go is the problem, its that players want to stay and fight for their place. I can understand that, but the bottom line is that we need to get someone in.

"We had two young lads from Leicester recommended to us, so we sorted everything out, only for them to say they want to stay where they are. But we still have time to sort it out."

The Stafford manager did have the chance to run the rule over his players in a 4-1 win at Leek in the Staffordshire Senior Cup on Saturday. The likes of McNiven, Proffitt, Tom Ingram and Jimmy Phillips all got the chance to shine - and were all on the scoresheet.

Bull said: "It was one of those Coalville type games, but this time we dug in and got the result. The likes of Tom Ingram and Darryl Proffitt came in and did well, showing me that they can do.

"It indicates to me that I may be getting some semblance of a squad together."

The manager also does not see Proffitt, who joined from Witton Albion last week, as the answer to all of his striker problems, despite his goalscoring debut at the weekend.

Bull said: "Darryl is one for the future for me but if he does step in, gets his chance and takes it, what can I say?"

There were also kind words for departing striker McNiven, who Bully confirmed will still be going to Fleetwood - despite the fact he is the club's top scorer.

The manager said: "He knows his job and he did well. It was what you call professionalism. He is not in my plans at the moment and will still be going to Fleetwood but, with the way he applied himself, he will still be in my thoughts."
