The 30-year-old has been training with the Blues in recent weeks, with McLeish known to want to bring the player in if he can eastablish his fitness.

The Scotland international missed the whole of last season with a persistent foot injury and has made just seven appearances for West Ham since signing for £1.75million from Albion in January 2007.

McLeish said: "He's still training with us, although he went back to London earlier in the week for personal reasons, but we're hoping to get him back in.

"He's looking very good and he's definitely got a lot of quality but it's just about his fitness levels. We've assessed him so far and he's just got a wee bit of fitness to find.

"I would like something to happen there. That will be up to Nigel and to see if there's been any reaction to the tough training that he's been doing.

"He's been out for a long time and picked up a couple of small niggles, which stopped him playing in the recent Manchester United reserve game."
