Penn: Next three months are vital

Kidderminster midfielder Russell Penn believes that the next three months will prove whether or not the Harriers have what it takes to be promoted from the Blue Square Premier.

The No 10 has seen much change over the summer at Aggborough. Much of last season's squad have been replaced, with younger players coming in as part of the new ethos the club have implemented.

A shaky start, winless after the first three games, was followed by three wins and a draw, indicating that on their day the Harriers have the talent to cause damage.

A 3-2 defeat at Grays has since dampened the mood a tad, but Penn knows the 2008/09 start to the campaign is already a big improvement in comparison to last term.

Now the longest serving player at the club, the England C international warns them the next three months will either make them or break them.

He said: "It has been a much better start to this season. We have a much more youthful squad so it is pleasing to see us do well. Hopefully we can push on now.

"We want to be in the thick of things about Christmas, when things can really happen. Maybe we could push for the play-off's or a top spot. The next three months are vital really."

Harriers have not been given much of a chance for promotion, with the likes of Oxford and Torquay the most favoured, although the Gulls have already fell at Kidderminster this campaign.

Penn feels that the league table this season will be the closest ever.

He said: "There will be no runaway champions this year. It will be a very close league. Anybody could win the league. It could be as many as 15 teams in with a shout.

"We always tend to play well against the better teams anyway. They tend to come and attack us, that makes for an open game and we have the players who can pounce on that."
