Hussain hit an unbeaten 77 off 35 balls as Aquil Ahmed's side reached 241-7 and then took an impressive four wickets from 14 overs, as stubborn Penkridge held out to close on 175-8.

Ahmed said: "We will push for second. Last year we finished fourth, hopefully this season we can finish second and next year hopefully we can do better again.

"We have some good young players and it's really nice to see the club doing well with the youngsters."

A memorial for deceased former player Paul Humphreys will be held at Cannock's cricket ground at 1pm on Sunday.

The club have stressed anyone who played with or against Paul is welcome. It will include a barbecue and the club's bar will be open with families welcome.

Andy Clarke and Alex Jones hit half centuries as Pelsall claimed a winning draw against Wednesbury.

Paul Grainger's men were 195-8 off 50 overs, Clarke top-scoring with 62 and Jones close behind with 52. His team were forced to settle for 13 points, as Wednesbury dug in to finish on 111-9.

Grainger, whose side face Old Wulfs Tettenhall at home next, said: "We haven't had the rub of the green in some ways recently, but we were a lot better on

Saturday.

"We were unlucky not to win the game. We lost a game to Milford Hall we shouldn't have lost and then we lost to Cannock & Rugeley, when we had them 72-7 chasing 160, so that put us back a little bit.

"We have perhaps under-performed a little bit. There were games we should and could have won and we didn't take them.

"Perhaps we're not quite good enough at the moment. It's a tight league, apart from a couple at the bottom.

"There's not a lot to choose between the rest of the teams – it's just one or two decisions going for or against you."

Azhar Mahmood starred on his return to action, as Hammerwich edged out Old Wulfs Tettenhall by a single wicket.

Mahmood, nicknamed 'The Perry Barr Express', put in a man-of-the-match display after a seven-week absence, taking 5-26 as Old Wulfs were bowled out for 162.

When he arrived at the crease, Hammerwich were up against it at 67-5 but Mahmood turned the game upside down, by knocking five sixes on the way to a

stunning 60 off just 30 balls to move them to 130-7.

Two quick wickets put Tom Nutting's men back in charge but Hammerwich skipper Brian Fisher held his nerve.

He steered his side home with an unbeaten 26. His side now face Beacon.

He said: "It was a fantastic return from Azhar. He hadn't picked up a bat or a ball for seven weeks. He was superb for us, it was his day."
