A David McNiven brace put Rangers two up after 11 minutes at Borough Park only for the Cumbrians to reply on the quarter hour.

Workington were then reduced to 10 men when central defender Karl May was red carded on the hour for throwing a punch at David McPherson. Stafford were unable to make their extra man count.

Carl Palmer, booked in the first half, received a second yellow within three minutes of May's dismissal.

He said: "It was a much better display than the one at Vauxhall during the week. The outcome was the same, a point in a game we should have won.

"Palmer's sending off didn't do us any favours but we also paid the price for a number of individual errors, after we had made a great start to the game.

"We worked very hard and chased everything down but we threw away victory. Really should now be sitting at the top of the table with maximum points."

An Andre Francis left wing corner was lashed into the net by McNiven after four minutes. McNiven then slid home the second from Palmer's pass, before the Rangers defence failed to deal with a corner and May shot into the roof of the net.

The Reds levelled after 73 minutes through a Tony Hooper header.
